The Fifth grade curriculum is comprised of two 45 minute sessions. A primary focus of the curriculum is on the increasing responsibility of the pre-adolescent child for the personal safety of his or her self and for the safety of other children; while reinforcing that the primary responsibility for the safety of 5th grade children rests with adults. The curriculum addresses sexting, Internet safety and teaches children to discriminate between safe and unsafe situations. An added component includes increased communication with parents or caregivers through take home materials including the parent/caregiver consent form, and Session 1 and Session 2 summaries. Understanding that the parent/caregiver-engagement materials may or may not be utilized, the child component has incorporated successful aspects of evidence-based child abuse primary prevention strategies in a way that it can stand alone as an effective program.
